Swiss Industry leader
In 1918 two chemists, Walter Merz and Albert Benteli founded the company Merz & Benteli. They concentrated on the manufacture and marketing of luminous colors which were mainly supplied to the Swiss watch making industry. In 1968 the “luminous color department” of Merz & Benteli spun-off a new company. That company is today’s mb-microtec.

mb-microtec is located in the city of Niederwangen, just outside of Berne, Switzerland. Research and development were focused totally on this new light source, free of the known disadvantages of the traditional luminous paints.  In the early 1970s, mb-microtec ag developed the technology to produce light sources so small, they could be installed on the hands and dial of a wristwatch.

The Technology
Innovative Swiss Technology
mb-microtec’s ability to manufacture trigalight®  (Gaseous Tritium Light Source) is the result of decades of research and development in the field of radio luminescence. Small glass tubes are coated on the inside with a phosphorescent material, then filled with a minute amount of tritium gas and hermetically sealed by a laser. Electrons emitted from the gas excite the material to give off a cold light. trigalight® can be manufactured to give off light in different colors.

trigalight®  are self-activated and self-powered light sources. They function independently from a battery or any other source of outside energy. They never need recharging or servicing and do not require the push of a button. They are 100 times brighter than anything comparable and have a life span of more than 20 years.
